At our September meeting we welcomed the fabulous textile artist Isobel Loftus.

Isobel brought us a very new and interesting perspective to quilting, coming at it from an artist’s point of view to explore a new way to express her Artistic Voice.

Her five key steps to finding your own ‘artistic voice’ were to select your subject matter; decide on your medium; choose your style; practise your skill and become consistent. 

Isobel used nature as an inspiration, kept to a limited colour palette, used recycled shirt material and contemporary quilting backgrounds embellished with a mixture of machine and hand quilting, wool couching and applique. 

We were particularly taken by her willingness to practise on multiple small projects rather than to always go for that full sized quilt and, of course, her inspiration diaries! Hers were filled with beautiful sketches but she assured us that we could achieve similar with magazine clippings and photos.
