Zelda Curran Thomas: Modern Welsh Quilts

A Story of Tradition, Family, and Modern Quilting

Join us for a fascinating and heartfelt evening with Zelda of Modern Welsh Quilts, as she shares the story behind her family’s extraordinary quilting heritage and how it lives on today.

Taught to quilt from an early age by her Welsh grandmother, Zelda comes from a long line of makers where quilting was part of everyday life. In her family and local valleys, quilts were made together, from scraps, with creativity, thrift, and meaning stitched into every piece.

During this talk, Zelda will explore the unique Llynfi and Garw Valley quilting tradition, where piecing takes centre stage and quilts tell stories shaped by family, faith, and place. She’ll share how these historic quilts differ from other Welsh traditions and how echoes of similar designs can even be seen in American and Amish-style quilting.

Zelda will also talk about how she balances honouring tradition while embracing modern creativity, and why keeping these skills alive matters so deeply to her today. Expect beautiful quilts, rich stories, and a real sense of connection to the past — with plenty to inspire modern quilters too.
